Screens on mobile: did the new version work?

Share:

Your team just shipped a redesigned Home screen in version 1.5. Everyone in the office loves it, but do your users? In a mobile app, the Screens page shows where people tap on every screen, and whether a new version works better than the old one.

What you'll learn

  • Which screens matter most? The screen list shows how many people saw each screen, what changed since last month, and badges for what stands out.

  • How do people move between screens? The Flow tab shows every route to a screen. Click Investigate, and Tara looks into a path.

  • What happens on one screen? Visits, time on screen and a heatmap in one place, and Tara to tell you what to fix first.

  • Where do people tap? Switch to rage taps, check portrait, landscape and phone sizes, and draw a box around one button to see how it does.

  • Did the new version work? Compare two app versions side by side, then switch to the change map.

  • Do people come back, and does it hold up? Retention, crashes and freezes on the screen, and every replay of it.

Ideas to try on your own product

  • Before you redesign a screen, look at its heatmap so you know where you're starting from, then compare versions after the release.

  • Look for rage taps on things that look tappable but aren't.

  • Check your key screens in landscape and on small phones.

  • After every release, sort the list by rage rate to see which screens got worse.

Your first step

Open the heatmap of your most important screen and switch to rage taps.
